Insight into the growing Biomass market

EastEuro Link hosted the CEE Biomass Conference in Prague on 8th December 2008. The CEE Biomass market represents some of most dynamic and exciting feature of the overall European energy therefore the EastEuro Link panel of expert speakers examined in detail key market drivers around the CEE region. In the constructive atmosphere the participants were offered opportunity to get insight into the latest developing through the live discussion and plenty of networking opportunities.

Proceedings were opened by the chairman Mr. Bernd Wollwerth, the Bio Energy Manager at Ecofys Germany who chaired the event excellently throughout the day. He highlighted the main driving forces for the use of Bioenergy, varieties of applications and production potential. This was followed by thorough outline of Biomass supply issues and related challenges by Dr François Vuille, Managing Consultant, E4tech and Co-Author of the "Bioenergy Review" of the International Energy Agency (IEA).

The next speaker to take stand was Mr. Vivek Mittal, Managing Director of the Millennium Resource Strategies Limited who addressed issues of financing biomass energy pointing out that the biomass energy projects are the most viable when combined with another related business such as forestry products, biofuels, district heating or commodity industrial processes dependent on steam.

A live discussion among the participants continued at the networking coffee break also bringing opportunity for making new business contacts In the session to follow, Mr. Wollwerth overviewed the European pellet market and the use of pellets as co-fuel in coal power plants. He said that the global pellets market was young and volatile but the use and trade of pellets was expected to increase in the future. The conference agenda also included the analysis on how to maximize the revenue stream for large biodiesel projects from field to tank, presented by Mr. Peter Brown, Principal, Euro Marketing Tools who concluded that the biofules would supplant petroleum and that BIOPEC has been becoming reality.


Following the extended networking opportunity during the lunch break, Mr. Gerfried Cebrat, Forschungsgesellschaft Mobilität (FGM), Austrian Mobility Research AMOR, examined the power train configurations widening biofuels usage and urging for the new power train concepts.

The issues of the CEE Biomass sustainable Feed-stock were also covered in the afternoon session. Mr. Ian Waller from Five Bargate Consultants examined in details policy measures and market responses.

To conclude this highly informative day, Mr. Karel Dedek from ATEKO, presented the Project Case Study: ATEKO’s development of electricity generation from biomass also overviewing CEE biomass market.

After a highly informative day the chairman closed conference by summarizing the wide range of ideas and discussions that had taken place throughout the day. The delegates were then free to engage in additional networking opportunities at the cocktail reception.
