Building on the popularity and tremendous success of past CEE Renewable Energy Forums, EastEuro Link successfully launched its SEE Renewable Energy event, dedicated to highlighting the opportunities unique to this dynamic and emerging market. Held on 24th November 2008 in Bucharest, the conference brought together a range of industry experts from all over Europe. The EastEuro Link panel of expert speakers examined in detail key market drivers around the SEE region.
Mr. Clifford J. Aron, Principal of GreenMax Capital Advisors, who chaired the event excellently throughout the day, provided a useful overview of today’s energy market introducing the topics to be discussed. This was followed by an impressive and thorough outline of the renewable energy market in the SEE region by Mr. Christian Oberleitner from Austrian Energy Agency. He said there was a high potential for RES in the SEE region but small steps have been taken although instruments for the promotion of RES were established in almost all countries.

The next speaker to take the stand was Mr. Cosmin Stavaru, Senior Associate of Bulboaca&Associatii SCA who delivered a highly informative presentation on Romanian wind farm sector, legal framework and market status. Mr. David Levin, partner at Eversheds International then presented the implications on the SEE region of the global developments in renewable and clean energy. He overviewed the impact of the credit crunch, availability of equity, current situation and the future trends in the SEE Renewable energy. The morning session stimulated a series of questions and a live discussion among the participants.
After a lively networking coffee break, the next session turned the attention to the prospects of existing and upcoming sector developments, the investment potentials of each specific sector and the diversity of the renewable market.

Dr. Andreas Wiese, Director Energy Division at Lahmeyer International GmbH gave an overview of the growing solar energy market, Mr. Casian Popa from Carbon Capital Markets explored trading in carbon emission markets and Ms. Hanna-Mari Ahonen, Senior Investment Manger at NEFCO examined what is it that investors are looking for in a renewable energy carbon finance transaction, also presenting several case studies from the Eastern European region.

Ms. Doina Cucuteanu, Executive Manager at Romanian Geoexchange Society then presented the Romanian ground source heat pump market.
The afternoon session focused on the SEE countries’ market specifics. Price incentives for renewable energy in Croatia and the neighbouring countries were examined by Mr. Jurica Brajkovic, Economist at Energy Institute Hrvoje Pozar. Mr. Mihai Coman, Relationship Manger at UniCredit Corporation captivated the audience with an overview of the market potentials, policies and challenges of the Bulgarian and Romanian markets. And Mr. Neil McGregor, partner at McGregor & Partners evaluated the wind energy market in Romania and Bulgaria. Another country in focus was Turkey and forum participants were offered an excellent overview of the Turkey renewable energy potentials in a presentation given by Mr. Clifford J. Aron.
To conclude the official conference programme, Dr. Magdalena Momirlan from Society for Promotion of Renewable, Inexhaustible and New Energy, University Politehnica from Bucharest, examined the 2050 long term perspective for the European Hydrogen.

Overall, the conference was a great success and brought together a number of influential players in the renewable energy industry to engage in numerous discussions and listen to some excellent insights into the sector.
