The success of biofuels in recent years is evident therefore the EastEuro Link panel of expert speakers examined in detail key market drivers around the CEE region.

Mr. Roger Blears, the Senior Partner and Head of Corporate Finance at Martineau Solicitors who chaired the event excellently throughout the day, said that the biofuels had never been more important nor since the rise in publicity had they been more subjected to such level of criticism. It is however necessary to find solutions to problems and to consider how best to meet the challenges with which we are faced.

Dr. Magdalena Rogulska, expert in socio-economic and biomass energy and the Deputy Director of Institute for fuels and Renewable energy then took the stand presenting the Biofuel Cities European Partnership and opportunities for CEEC – a project aiming to promote the application of biofuels across the Europe, to form new partnerships for projects between all stakeholders and to offer support through exchange of information and networking. To conclude the morning session, Dr. Richard Weightman from Centre for Sustainable Crop Management – ADAS examined important topics such as the importance of crop productivity, the future of yield improvements, displacement effects of biofuels, importance of co-products and indirect effects of biofuels. A live discussion among the participants continued at the networking coffee break also bringing opportunity for making new contacts along with the informative exhibition viewing.

In the session to follow, biofuels production issues were discussed such as rapid analysis and process optimisation as well as alternative routes to process the low quality raw materials to produce biofuels. The insightful presentations from the FOSS and Desmet Ballestra managers provoked series of questions among the audience, highlighting the importance of the production process optimisation.

Following the extended networking opportunity during the lunch break, a financial outlook of the biofuels market including funding and investing issues were examined. Key factors for a successful biodiesel plant project were presented by BDI Biodiesel International sales director, Mr. Hermann Stockinger. European bioethanol market challenges and opportunities were also discussed after the presentation of Ms. Harlander, Vogelbuch Marketing Manager. An important contribution to this most interesting panel was given by Mr. Peter Brown, Founder and Principal of Euro Marketing Tools who concluded that the biofules would supplant petroleum and that BIOPEC has been becoming reality.

Two remarkable country specific case studies were presented after the refreshing afternoon coffee break: example of Rossi Biofuel Pte Ltd, the largest biodiesel producer and supplier in Hungary and the outlook of biodiesel industry in Turkey. Both studies helped better understanding of economic and legal environment as well as specific market dynamics and potentials of the countries.
