EastEuro Link hosted its inaugural Carbon Emission Trading Forum in Poland on 20th June 2008, with participants and speakers from all over Europe in attendance. Taking place in the Sofitel Victoria Hotel in Warsaw, the event was supported by a host of associate sponsors and media partners involved in the sector.

Proceedings were opened by the chairman, Mr. Clifford J. Aron, President of GrenMax Capital Advisors who welcomed the participants to Warsaw and gave the most interesting introduction into the topics to be discussed.
The first speaker to take stand was Mr. Vianney Schyns, Manager Climate and Energy Efficiency, Utility Support Group. His presentation on EU ETS Allocation rules and their vital importance for effectiveness and to avoid leakage provoked a live discussion among the participants that continued throughout the day. This was followed by an interesting overview of the specific business opportunities in Croatia, country joining EU-ETS – given by Mr. Willem Maaskant of BGP Engineers B.V.

After a lively networking coffee break that also enabled delegates to establish new useful business contacts, the next session commenced with a presentation on implementing Joint Implementation in Poland and why JI is the poor relation to CDM, provided by Mr. Anthony Hobley, Partner in Norton Rose LLP. Mr. Carel Cronenberg, Project Manager, DHV then spoke about Carbon Capture and storage, how will it work and his views if CCS will determine the future of carbon markets.

Following an extended networking opportunity during the delicious lunch, the afternoon session turned the attention towards the new prospects for a more robust trading market in the CEE. Mr. Peter de Waal, Senior Executive of Fortis Carbon Banking in his overview of the carbon market pointed out that Europe has already announced its determination to cut emissions further by up to 30% of 1990 emissions by 2020 and those countries outside the EU have already expressed interest and are likely to start similar schemes soon.
Dr. Margit Kapfer, Senior Consultant of Denkstatt GmbH then spoke about the Impact of the EU ETS on industrial competitiveness and the financial effects on corporates.
To conclude this highly informative day, Mr. Alexander Winzer, Managing Director, Climate Corporation spoke about accessing current carbon pricing trends and forecasting the data flows from carbon funds.

The chairman closed conference by summarising the wide range of ideas and discussions that had taken place throughout the day. The delegates were then free to engage in additional networking opportunities at the cocktail reception.

The conference brought together a number of influential players in the market to engage in numerous discussions and listen to some excellent insights into the sector.

EastEuro Link thanks all delegates and speakers who attending the event and hopes to see many of the same faces at its upcoming conferences.
