EastEuro Link hosted its inaugural Indian Biofuels and Carbon Markets Conference in London on 24th October 2007, with participants and speakers from both India and the EU in attendance. Taking place in the uniquely presented Brewery Conference Centre in London, the event was supported by a host of associate sponsors and media partners involved in the biofuels and carbon markets industries.

Dr. Vivek Tandon,
Founder and General Partner,
Aloe Private Equity

Proceedings were opened by the co-chairman, Dr. Vivek Tandon, Founder and General Partner of Aloe Private Equity, who began the Biofuels section by giving a useful overview of the market in India and by demonstrating that integrated bio energy complexes can overcome supply and pricing problems in India. Dr R.P. Singh, Chairman of IKF Technologies in India, then emphasised the need for biofuels production in India due to heavy fuel consumption and the high potential for utilising Jatropha feedstocks. The long term viability of Jatropha was stressed further by Dr Ganapathy Arumugam of Enhanced Biofuels and Technologies India, before Mr. Abhay Deshpande, Biofuels Vice-President of Shree Renuka Sugars, explained that there is also a hidden potential for Ethanol in India, but that more investment is required to boost production capacity.

After a lively networking break, co-chairperson Ms. Pamposh Bhat, Director of Climate Change at GTZ, opened the Carbon Markets section of the conference. She stated that there are many opportunities for investment in Indian Carbon Markets although buyers need to show more transparency and to offer fair prices to sellers. Next to speak was Ms. Verena Rix, Project Manager of the CDM Unit at The Carbon Credit Company, who gave a thorough analysis of CDM in India, Risk Assessment and CER Pricing. Ms. Natalia Gorina, Senior Consultant at ICF International, then explained that India is likely to maintain its leading role in the CDM market, although barriers need to be overcome, such as the inability of smaller project developers to sell CERs to the secondary market. Finally, Mr. Ben Atkinson, Director of Aginergy, focused on competition in the Indian Carbon Market, particularly underlining the unilateral nature of Indian CDM.

The afternoon session turned the attention of the audience towards finance and investment, and was begun by Mr. Roland Jansen, CEO of Mother Earth Investments. Mr. Jansen delivered a very colourful and informative presentation on Investment Opportunities in Indian Biofuels, highlighting the reasons for his company becoming the world’s first Jatropha Investment Fund. Mr. Guy Turner, Director at New Carbon Finance, followed this by discussing Biomass CDM Investment in India, noting that Biomass Projects are generally getting bigger, although India is falling behind China in terms of CDM developments. Mr. Luiz Crispim of Ecosecurities was next to take the stand, and he delivered a presentation offering advice for third party capital providers in the Indian Market. He concluded that CER related structures are preferred as the contract can be outside India and the CERs delivered to a non Indian registry account. The topical advice was continued by Mr. Peter Zaman, Partner at Clifford Chance, who gave a legal perspective to Carbon Markets Investments and gave particular emphasis to the complex negotiations between buyers and sellers. Finally, Ms. Roon Osman, CDM and JI Team Leader of Shell Trading, gave a valuable insight to investing in Clean Energy Projects in the Indian market. After a series of questions to the panel from the audience, the conference was concluded with a final networking coffee session.

The event brought together a number of influential players in the Indian Biofuels and Carbon Markets Industries to engage in numerous discussions and listen to some excellent insights into the sector. EastEuro Link thanks all delegates and speakers who attending the event and hopes to see many of the same faces at its upcoming energy conferences this year and next.
