Before coming to Europe he was the Director for Renewable Energy for the South African government where he co-developed a strategy to deliver the national renewable energy target. Brett started his energy career in the Oil and Gas industry where he was a design engineer for 4,5 years at Sasol’s Fischer-Tropsch process; and a business investment analyst for Shell for 3 years.

In the past years, Francois has been concentrating on consulting projects in the field of bioenergy, as well as in the Fuel Cell & Hydrogen sector, with a particular focus on understanding technical, policy and socio-economic barriers to technology deployment. In this context, he is an advisor to governments, to the industry and growingly to finance institutions that want to understand the challenges and cease opportunities in the clean energy sector.
Amongst other key current projects, Francois is one of the leading individuals preparing the "Authoritative Bioenergy Review" of the International Energy Agency (IEA) due for publication a the end of 2008. He was also an invited speaker at the EU Biomass Forum, held in Amsterdam in June 2008.
Francois has worked with industry, government, non-government and international organisations (UN, International Energy Agency, European Commission, European Space Agency). He is experienced in the techno-economic assessment of large-scale projects and technologies, in particular in the domain of innovative transport systems and energy technologies. He has also know-how in the field of risk assessment of complex systems and is expert in the field of safety and reliability for the Swiss Federal Office of Transport.
François holds degrees in Physics (1995) and in Energy Engineering (2002) from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, as well as a PhD in Astrophysics from the University of Cape Town (1998). Francois is lecturing at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in the fields of Energy (wood-energy systems and electro-magnetic energy) and Risk Management.
François speaks French, English and German, as well as some Spanish and Swiss German.

He started at the ECB Enviro Berlin AG in 2000 and collected theoretical and practical experience in biogas issues while working as a biogas plant operator. Later he was appointed as the head of the biodiesel department and was able to obtain a deep insight in technical and economical tasks of the biodiesel sector. In 2003 he started working for the German Federal State Energy Agency as project manager of the German Federal Governments export promotion program for renewable energies. He was involved in the design and project management of support mechanisms and networks to strengthen the international activities of renewable energy companies and has worked on several studies and projects about international market conditions and promotional schemes for renewable energies.
